Belize is culturally unique among Central American nations It is the only nation in Central America with a British colonial heritage although as a part of the Western Caribbean Zone it shares this heritage with the Caribbean portions of other Central American countries.
Belize has sought to build closer ties with the Spanish speaking countries of Central America to complement its historical ties to the English Caribbean states In 2005 Belize joined other Central American countries participating in the Cooperating Nations Information Exchange System.
